This is a sworn enforcement position upholding property maintenance standards in accordance with local ordinances.  Work includes inspecting, citing and abating nuisances.  Direction is received from the Police Department.  The employee is expected to initiate action to identify abatement needs.


-           Issues citations for property standards violations for items such as trash, snow and litter removal; issues citations for ordinance violations such as parking and signs

-           Obtains quotes/bids for private contractors for property cleanup and mowing

-           Monitors private contractors for contract compliance

-           Coordinates actions with the county health department and city housing inspectors

-           Assists the city attorney in court cases and testifies

-           Bills property owners for abatement actions; authorizes contractor payments

-           Investigates, tags and coordinates the removal of junk vehicles

-           Performs daily inspection of equipment; responsible for the safe operation of assigned equipment

-           Performs related work within the general knowledge, skills and abilities set forth



-           A high school diploma with a general studies background 

-           Possess and maintain a valid Michigan driver's license

-           Knowledge of and the ability to read, interpret and implement local ordinances

-           Ability to set daily schedule

-           Ability to decide abatement action

-           Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, coworkers and the public
